Levels for Kids

Bachelor-Studio”Housing” SS2013 -Vienna University of Technology

DESIGN CONCEPT
The basic idea and the form of the building is based on considerations of privacy and exposure. By moving the individual levels, we create private courtyards, balconies and terraces, which is an added value for the family and especially the children. A direct connection of the child‘s room to the terrace, courtyards and balconies increases additionally the quality of living.

ACCESS CONCEPT
The ground floor and the 1st upper floor are maisonettes, which offer many advantages in terms of different orientations of the rooms, as well as other qualities in connection with floor openings for double room height. The third floor will be accessed through external walkways, which are intended to raise the interest of the children through the routing and also to build up an connection to the outdoor space.

FLOOR PLAN CONCEPT
The essential concept of the floor plans are the courtyards, terraces and balconies, assigned to the children‘s rooms. For the children‘s rooms we differentiate 3 types:

  1. children‘s room to the apartment-internal courtyard:
These rooms have levels under which the bed can be moved and which can also be used as a writing desk. These levels are reaching out to the outside space (courtyard, terrace, balcony) and serve as a private area of the child within the community court and are used as couches, playing areas etc.
  2. children‘s room with own private terrace
  3. combination of 1 and 2 (partially with sliding elements)
